Biography

A trusted veteran in the financial services industry, Rod Jones is often contacted by banks in and out of Florida for legal advice and representation. They count on his 28 years of experience in the industry and his insight as a former banking regulator for the state. A senior partner at Shutts & Bowen, Mr. Jones offers skilled legal guidance to financial services providers that have a presence in Florida or seek to develop one. He works with foreign and domestic banks, insurance companies, brokerage firms, credit card companies and other financial service firms from his office in Orlando.

Mr. Jones is especially adept at guiding firms that are trying to gain a foothold in the state, either through mergers and acquisitions or by forming a new institution.  He regularly advises the organizers of new institutions, including de novo banks, and assists clients in merger and acquisition transactions as well as geographic and product market expansion. His practice also includes fiduciary activities, structural reorganization issues and alternative strategies to deliver financial products and services. His experience is a great asset in resolving compliance problems as well as safety and soundness concerns. As a former regulator with relationships at the state and federal levels, Mr. Jones understands the supervisory process and communicates effectively with financial institution regulators.

Background

Mr. Jones joined Shutts & Bowen in September 1989. Before joining the firm, he was the Director of the Division of Banking of the Florida Department of Banking and Finance from 1984 to 1989. In this position, he had responsibility for licensing and supervising more than 500 state-chartered financial institutions. Previously, Mr. Jones served for four years as staff counsel and banking analyst for the Committee on Commerce of the Florida House of Representatives. During this time, he was involved in drafting major revisions to the Florida Financial Institutions Codes and also worked on Florida's first interstate banking legislation.
