Biography

A former CPA and a lawyer for nearly 20 years, Peter Shapiro offers valuable experience to his clients. His ability to dissect a financial problem and react with an effective legal response has helped businesses with reorganizations, out of court workouts and other creditors’ rights and bankruptcy issues. As a partner in the Fort Lauderdale office, he has worked in various industries and is an experienced counselor for lending institutions, creditors’ committees, secured and unsecured creditors, debtors, and trustees. He is a member of the firm’s Creditors’ Rights and Bankruptcy Practice Group.

With experience in both law and finance, Mr. Shapiro is thoroughly familiar with the tough choices faced by businesses in bankruptcy. This understanding and his practical approach allow him to guide clients in cases ranging from out of court negotiations, to complex, corporate bankruptcies.

Working within diverse industries, Mr. Shapiro also counsels clients who invest in, acquire and reorganize distressed companies. His reorganization experience has led to financial turnarounds in real estate, telecommunications, construction, manufacturing, service, entertainment and retail. His work also extends to issues involving cash collateral, “DIP” financing, plans of reorganization, executory contracts, automatic stay and related issues. Other actions include fraudulent conveyances, preferential transfer and avoidance actions.

For real estate clients, Mr. Shapiro handles mortgage financings, loan restructurings, workouts, sales, acquisitions, and commercial leases.

Mr. Shapiro speaks at industry seminars as well. He was a lecturer for the Sterling Education Series on "Bankruptcy Developments affecting the Real Estate Industry.”

Mr. Shapiro is also a CPA, having worked for an international accounting firm in Boston before attending law school.
