Biography

Jerel C. Dawson is a partner in Shutts & Bowen’s Miami office, where he is a member of the Insurance Practice Group. Mr. Dawson practices in the areas of life, health and disability insurance defense, with particular focus on federal ERISA litigation.  Since August 2003, he has prepared 28 successful summary judgment motions on behalf of insurers in ERISA actions.  He has also successfully defended appeals of such judgments in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Mr. Dawson  is the author of two articles on ERISA disability law:  "Subjective Tension:  The Conundrum of Self-Reported Symptoms," published in the September 2008 issue of For The Defense, the flagship publication of the Defense Research Institute (DRI); and "Amended ERISA Regulation and Standard of Review:  The Courts Remain Divided," published in the Summer 2007 issue of the DRI's Life, Health and Disability News.
