Alexander I. Tachmes is a partner in Shutts & Bowen’s Real Estate Department in Miami. He concentrates his practice in the areas of governmental matters including land use and zoning, competitive bidding and lobbying, commercial transactions including real estate, and matters pertaining to the hospitality industry.
Mr. Tachmes received his Bachelor of Arts degree, Phi Beta Kappa, cum laude, from the University of Miami in 1986. In 1989, he earmed a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Miami School of Law, cum laude, and was a published author, special comment editor and member of the Law Review. During his third year of law school, he served as a clerk to United States Court of Appeals Judge Peter Fay. Upon graduating from law school, he was named to the Order of the Coif. He is a recipient of the American Jurisprudence Award in the area of Creditors' Rights and Remedies.
After graduation, Mr. Tachmes practiced at two national law firms before becoming a First Assistant City Attorney for Miami Beach. While with the city, he concentrated his practice in the areas of public-private real estate development and other transactions. Mr. Tachmes served as counsel to the city and the Miami Beach Redevelopment Agency in the negotiation and documentation of the Loews Miami Beach Hotel operation of a $150 million 800 room convention center hotel and parking complex on public land. The project is one of the largest public-private transactions, in terms of its overall cost, in Miami Beach history. Mr. Tachmes also served as counsel to the city and the Miami Beach Redevelopment Agency on the Royal Palm Crowne Plaza Resort, a $60 million, 422 room hotel on public land, adjacent to the new Loews hotel.
In 1997, Mr. Tachmes left the public sector and formed the law firm of Alexander I. Tachmes, P.A. In 1998, he served as Vice President and General Counsel of Peebles Atlantic Development Corporation, a real estate development firm (“PADC”).
Mr. Tachmes has extensive experience representing developers and other clients in connection with governmental matters, including site plan and zoning approvals; historic preservation issues; building code, fire and code compliance matters; and related municipal government items. He also has nearly twelve (12) years of experience representing clients regarding hotel and hospitality industry matters and commercial real estate transactions.
