Shutts & Bowen is pleased to announce that Miami-Dade County Judge Gladys Pérez has joined the firm as a partner in the Miami office, where she is a member of the firm's Class Action and Mass Litigation Defense Practice Group.

Judge Pérez, a County Judge since August 2009, accepted the firm’s offer Nov. 7 and retired from the bench Nov. 30. Before becoming a judge, she served in Tallahassee as Assistant General Counsel to former Governors Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist; as an Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Rights Division of the Florida Office of the Attorney General, and as a Senior Staff Attorney for the Fourth District Court of Appeal.

“Judge Pérez is a powerful addition to our firm, with a record of great accomplishment and even greater promise for the future,” said partner Bowman Brown, chair of the firm’s Executive Committee. “She has a rare combination of experience in both state government and trial and appellate courts.”

"Shutts & Bowen is an established, forward-thinking, vibrant, innovative and increasingly diverse law firm, and I look forward to digging into challenging cases,” Judge Perez said. “There's lots of staying power and a group of terrific people. I am delighted to be joining the firm.”

A frequent lecturer and presenter, she has taught at the Florida Judicial College, the New Judges College, the Conference of County Court Judges, and the University of Miami.

She has been an active volunteer in both her profession and her community. From 2011 until this year, she chaired the National Association of Women Judges for the State of Florida. She has also served as a Co-Chair of the Cuban American Bar Association’s Human Rights Committee, and Legislative Chair of the Equal Opportunities Law Section of The Florida Bar.

After leaving state government, Judge Pérez was a human rights consultant in Geneva, Switzerland, for the philanthropic group VIDES — Volunteers In Development Education Solidarity. She earned her J.D. cum laude from Nova Southeastern University, and her B.A. magna cum laude from Barry University.
