Our 2023 Summer Associate Program brought 14 law students from eight law schools to the firm for an intellectually challenging and professionally gratifying experience. The students took part in firm-sponsored social events and community service projects throughout the summer in addition to attending client meetings, depositions, court hearings and other proceedings. Nearing the end of the program, the students agreed to share a few highlights from their summer at Shutts.
Elyse D. Jackson-Wu, a student at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, joined Shutts in the Miami office as a participant of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD)’s 1L Scholar Program. Elyse is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council, the Intellectual Property Law Society, the Entertainment and Sports Law Club, and the Hispanic Student Association. She is also a participant in the Inclusion, Diversity and Justice Pre-Orientation Program.
Elyse shares her thoughts on her summer experience at Shutts.
Why did you choose to join Shutts for the summer?
The choice to join Shutts was easy! Shutts has a wonderful reputation in Florida, and I was eager to become part of the team. I was also drawn to the numerous practice areas.
What is something that you learned or a new skill that you gained during the summer program?
Through my experience this summer, I have developed stronger research skills, an organized approach to my writing, and clearer communication.
Describe a typical day as a summer associate at Shutts.
A typical day varied quite a bit. One day I could be working on Intellectual Property research and the next day writing a memo for Insurance Litigation. I loved that my days were usually comprised of a lot of different projects in areas I wanted to explore.
What were your expectations for the summer and have they been met (or exceeded)?
I was expecting to explore different practice areas while sharpening my skills and this expectation has been exceeded. I met incredible attorneys, was given valuable advice and feedback, explored many different practice areas, improved on a number of skills, and made new friends along the way!
