Ella Shenhav Comments on University’s Data Privacy Measures

Ella Shenhav, a partner in Shutts & Bowen LLP’s Tampa office, was recently quoted in the GW Hatchet, an editorial publication serving the George Washington University community, where she discussed the potential of data privacy breaches following the release of privacy “core principles” in connection with a data analytics pilot project that occurred on campus during the fall of 2021.

According to the article, George Washington University’s newly released set of “core principles” are too broad to protect students from potential tracking and leave individuals unprotected from potential data privacy breaches. Commenting on the policies, Ella explained that the core principles do not specify what type of data the University would want to collect for students, like geolocation and video information, or how it would use and store it.

She also noted that creating data privacy policies often takes a few months to a year, so she was surprised that officials only presented three general principles by now. “A year is definitely sufficient to develop those kinds of policies and procedures,” said Ella.

The GW Hatchet is an editorially and financially independent student newspaper serving The George Washington University community in downtown Washington, D.C. First published Oct. 5, 1904, it is the second-oldest continuously published newspaper in the District, after The Washington Post. The Hatchet publishes a print edition on Monday and an email edition every Thursday during the academic year. In 2018, the Associated Collegiate Press named The Hatchet one of the best online college newspapers in the nation.
