Miami Law International Arbitration LL.M. Practicum Celebrates Five YearsAt the conclusion of the Spring 2020 semester, the International Arbitration LL.M. Practicum Program at Miami Law celebrated its fifth year offering the skills-based course work which allows students to obtain practical experience in the field of international arbitration with Miami-based law firms for academic credit while pursuing the LL.M. degree.

Since 2016, Shutts & Bowen has participated in the practicum program, offering students the opportunity to obtain practical experience in the field of international arbitration. Ed Patricoff, Chair of the firm’s International Dispute Resolution Practice Group, supervises the program.

“Shutts is proud to partner with the University of Miami School of Law to provide their students with practical experiences necessary to influence their career paths,” stated Ed. “We hope to provide all students with diverse and challenging projects in a positive and professional work environment.”

Natalia Jaramillo completed her practicum at Shutts & Bowen in Summer 2019. During her time at the firm, the Colombian-American student worked on multiple ICC and ICDR arbitrations and traveled with the partners for pre-arbitration hearings.

“My experience at Shutts & Bowen had an invaluable impact in my career path,” she stated. “I was able to work with and learn from leading practitioners in the International Arbitration and Litigation field in Miami, and was able to apply all of the invaluable knowledge I had acquired in my LL.M. classes. I was not only an intern, but also a member of the team. I am forever thankful to our program director Sandra Friedrich and the Shutts & Bowen team for giving me this incredible opportunity.”

Additionally, Russian student Madina Lokova, whose practicum placement at Shutts in Fall 2016 was her first practical experience at a U.S. law firm, stated that her time at the firm “provided invaluable insight into the U.S. working style and standards as well as the expectations that a young attorney should meet for a successful career in a top notch legal practice in the United States.”

Tanya Shankar, an Australian student who completed her practicum at Shutts during the Fall 2016 semester, stated that her duties were diverse, her work was challenging, and that the atmosphere at Shutts was professional. “The most rewarding part of my job,” she said, “was seeing how my hard-work played a role in bringing about successful business outcomes for the client abroad.” Tanya remained at the firm as a Law Clerk after the conclusion of her program.
