Our 2026 Summer Associate Program brought 8 law students to the firm for an intellectually challenging and professionally gratifying experience. The students took part in firm-sponsored social events and community service projects throughout the summer in addition to attending client meetings, depositions, court hearings and other proceedings. Nearing the end of the program, the students agreed to share a few highlights from their summer at Shutts.
Andre Chammas joined Shutts’ Miami office for the summer from Florida International University College of Law. His previous experience includes an internship for the Honorable Judge Ellen Venzer in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit.
Andre shares his thoughts on his summer experience at Shutts.
Why did you choose to spend your 2026 Summer with Shutts?
Shutts stood out because of the level of sophistication at which the firm operates. Considering I have a background in finance, I envisioned myself doing some sort of corporate work. I knew I needed a platform that could match my ambition. Shutts has the reputation, the client base, and the complexity that makes it the kind of place where a business minded law student can grow into the attorney they want to be. Having the chance to be here was one of the best opportunities I have been given during law school, and I am genuinely grateful for it.
What were the three most memorable experiences throughout your time here?
Observing the evidentiary hearing in Judge Watson’s courtroom and having lunch in chambers with him after was something I will carry with me for a long time. The mock trial was the most demanding thing I did all summer and the month of preparation it took made the result that much more meaningful. Our community service project at Feeding South Florida showed me a side of this firm that does not show up in rankings. Shutts genuinely gives back to Miami, and I appreciated being part of that.
What is something new that you learned during the summer program?
Showing initiative is everything - no one is going to tell you when to ask for work or when to take ownership of something. The attorneys here gave me every tool and every piece of guidance I needed to succeed, and I am incredibly grateful for that investment. What I learned is that what you do with that support is entirely on you. Moving with initiative rather than waiting to be directed was the most important professional shifts I made this summer. If you want something, you have to be persistent and diligent when entrusted with the task.
