Our 2026 Summer Associate Program brought 8 law students to the firm for an intellectually challenging and professionally gratifying experience. The students took part in firm-sponsored social events and community service projects throughout the summer in addition to attending client meetings, depositions, court hearings and other proceedings. Nearing the end of the program, the students agreed to share a few highlights from their summer at Shutts.
Riley Martin joined Shutts’ Orlando office for the summer from Stetson University College of Law. His previous experience includes internships for the Honorable Judge Atkinson in the Florida Second District Court of Appeal and for the Honorable Judge Jung in the U.S. Middle District Court of Florida.
Riley shares his thoughts on his summer experience at Shutts.
Why did you choose to spend your 2026 Summer with Shutts?
I chose to spend my summer with Shutts because it is a firm where I can envision myself working for decades and becoming a partner. What attracts me to the Shutts is: the firm has a great reputation among my law school community, it has all the practice groups I am interested in, it is a large firm with sophisticated clients and incredibly smart lawyers, and everyone at the firm has been friendly and welcoming to me.
What were the three most memorable experiences throughout your time here? Collaborating with Cameron Katz and Brianna Lohmann on two client memos was probably my most memorable experience, as both Senior Associates gave me substantial feedback on my legal writing skills and were generous with their time when I needed guidance. Working with Don Currotto and Michael Friedman to develop 59 lease notice agreements was also exciting and challenging. I felt that I played an important role in a major transaction project that required a quick turnaround, which offered me a clear perspective on the practice for full-time associates. The orientation was memorable as well; everyone I met was welcoming and made the effort to connect with me.
What advice would you give to someone about starting the interview process? It is important to be authentic and to show your personality. A significant aspect of working in a law firm is the daily interaction with the same colleagues. Showing a friendly personality and collaborative nature is essential for thriving in a sophisticated law firm like Shutts.
