Our 2026 Summer Associate Program brought 8 law students to the firm for an intellectually challenging and professionally gratifying experience. The students took part in firm-sponsored social events and community service projects throughout the summer in addition to attending client meetings, depositions, court hearings and other proceedings. Nearing the end of the program, the students agreed to share a few highlights from their summer at Shutts.
Ana Belen Rodriguez Sanchez joined Shutts’ Miami office for the summer from Florida International University College of Law. She is a member of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and the International Law Society (ILS) and serves as a 3L Class Representative.
Why did you choose to spend your 2026 Summer with Shutts?
I had the opportunity to join Shutts as a Summer Associate during the summer of 2025. I chose to return because, beyond having an exceptional group of attorneys and professionals, Shutts is a great place to grow both professionally and personally. One of the things I value most is the firm’s culture of mentorship. Every associate and partner at Shutts is willing to mentor the Summer Associates, provide constructive feedback, and support our professional development.
What is something new that you learned during the summer program?
One of the most valuable aspects of the summer program was the Litigation Skills Workshop series. As a law student, I have had limited exposure to practical litigation skills, and these workshops provided valuable instruction that complemented what I had learned in the classroom. I learned how to introduce exhibits into evidence, prepare and impeach witnesses, and draft opening/closing statements, all of which I had the opportunity to apply during this summer’s Mock Trial.
What advice would you give to someone about starting the interview process?
I would encourage anyone beginning the interview process to first identify the type of firm/group they would enjoy working with. Beyond searching for firms with talented and prepared lawyers, I think it is important to consider factors such as the group’s size, the firm’s practice areas, opportunities for mentorship, and whether the firm provides an environment where you can grow both professionally and personally.
