On Saturday, November 19, Fort Lauderdale associate Deedee Bitran participated as a judge in the Street Law Mock Trial Competition at the Broward County Courthouse at the invitation of Judge Robert Diaz.
During this National Law Program sponsored locally by the Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law, middle school and high school students play the role of witnesses or attorneys in mock trials. They present their case in a real courtroom before attorneys who serve as judges and family members who serve as jurors. The rules of the mock trial do not let judges decide which side won or lost the case, but allow positive comments on the abilities of the young lawyers.
“It was a wonderful experience meeting and judging the student advocates,” said Deedee. “It was exciting and inspirational to see such young students so fascinated by the legal system and in administering justice. I have no doubt that many of those students will become excellent attorneys in the future.”
