Bowman Brown, a partner in Shutts & Bowen LLP’s Miami office, recently reflected on his decades-long career helping shape Florida’s financial services sector and the firm’s role in the state’s economic development in a Florida Trend “Icon” feature.

Bowman joined the firm in the early 1960s after moving from New York to Miami as the city was beginning its rapid growth. He initially handled securities work for several community bank clients before expanding into banking law when the firm had no dedicated practitioner in the area. At the time, Florida law limited state-chartered banks to operating within a single county, restricting growth. Over the course of his career, Bowman helped develop legal strategies that contributed to breaking down these barriers and advancing interstate banking in Florida and across the country.

As international banks, broker-dealers, hedge funds, and asset managers established operations in South Florida, the legal practice surrounding financial institutions grew increasingly sophisticated. Bowman credits this influx of global firms with helping transform Miami and Brickell into a vibrant financial center.

Reflecting on his career, Bowman credits the firm’s collaborative culture and believes emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, will significantly reshape the future of legal practice.
