Giancarlo Cueto

Giancarlo Cueto is an Associate in the Miami office of Shutts & Bowen LLP, where he is a member of the International Litigation and Arbitration Practice Group. Giancarlo focuses his practice on representing international and domestic clients in complex litigation, arbitration, U.S. sanctions and export controls compliance, and cross-border business arrangements.

Giancarlo has experience in complex, commercial litigation and ICDR, AAA, JAMS, and ICC arbitration matters spanning corporate shareholder, aviation, technology, and investment disputes, as well as corporate fraud, and asset recovery. He also advises clients on matters arising under the 1958 New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards. On the regulatory and transactional side, Giancarlo counsels foreign and domestic clients on U.S. sanctions compliance, including matters arising under the Cuban Assets Control Regulations (CACR) and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), export controls, and the structuring of joint ventures and other cross-border commercial arrangements involving foreign entities.

Giancarlo is an active member of the International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA), where he has served on organizing committees for international congresses and spoken on topics at the intersection of international arbitration and cross-border dispute resolution. He is also a member of the Cuban-American Bar Association (CABA) and Interlaw’s NextGeneration Lawyers Affinity Group.

A fluent Spanish speaker, Giancarlo is uniquely equipped to assist foreign clients in multijurisdictional matters and to navigate U.S. legal and regulatory requirements.

Prior to joining Shutts, Giancarlo served a federal clerkship with the Honorable James Lawrence King in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Giancarlo holds a Bachelor of Business Administration, with a Major in Finance and a Minor in International Business, from the University of Miami. Giancarlo earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law.
